The Role of Packaging in E-Commerce Success: Best Practices for Amazon Sellers

Packaging is one of the most underestimated levers in e-commerce. For Amazon FBA sellers, packaging serves two distinct purposes: inbound prep packaging (what Amazon requires before accepting your inventory) and customer-facing packaging (what the buyer sees when they open their order). Both directly impact your bottom line.
Amazon's prep requirements exist to protect products in FCs and during last-mile delivery. Polybags must meet thickness standards and include suffocation warnings. Fragile items need bubble wrap or box-in-box protection. Liquids require double-sealing. Non-compliance leads to inbound rejections, unplanned prep fees, or customer damage claims — all of which erode margin.
Customer-facing packaging is your brand's only physical touchpoint. Even on FBA, where Amazon ships in their box, the product presentation inside matters. Clean, professional packaging reduces perceived risk and return rates. For FBM and DTC channels, branded packaging creates unboxing moments that drive reviews and repeat purchases.
Sustainable packaging is increasingly important. Amazon's Frustration-Free Packaging program rewards sellers who reduce waste, and consumers actively prefer eco-friendly options. Right-sizing boxes and eliminating unnecessary filler cuts freight costs and environmental impact simultaneously.
Work with a prep partner who stays current on Amazon's packaging requirements and can advise on cost-effective materials. The cheapest polybag is not the best choice if it fails Amazon's inspection. Invest in packaging that passes compliance the first time and presents your product professionally to the end customer.
